Who we are
Coconino County Health and Human Services’ Healthy Families program offers free and voluntary home-visiting support to families from pregnancy through a child's 5th birthday, focusing on parenting skills, child development, and family well-being. In 2024, the program integrated the Family Spirit curriculum serving Indigenous families in the Flagstaff, Arizona area. The program has partnerships with local organizations, including WIC, Flagstaff Medical Center, and mental health providers to build outreach and offer referrals.
Our work with SPIRIT
CCHHS Healthy Families is partnering with the Coconino County Parks and Recreation Department to add birth to five play elements to the County's Rec on Wheels program which travels throughout the County to offer mobile recreation activities. Our team's Family Support Specialists will utilize the mobile play elements in home visits with families.
Our site will soon begin construction of a fixed play space in the lobby of the Coconino County Health & Human Services Department to offer a safe, fun and colorful area for children to play while their caregivers access the over 50 programs and services offered by CCHHS.
What SPIRIT means to us
The SPIRIT program has allowed our team to connect more deeply with the families that we support. Culture is an inherent aspect of parenting that is often overlooked by most home visiting programs in the US. Family SPIRIT has provided our team with the training and tools to integrate culture into every home visit. The project enhances our efforts to build protective factors by drawing on a family’s culture and incorporating creative Indigenous play elements.
